Stuck In a Rut

Lately I've been stuck in a rut when it comes to the blog. I get great ideas for posts, and I also have some stuff to review, but then when I actually open the 'New Post' page, I write two sentences then I lose interest. It's not like I've lost interest in blogging altogether, but lately I've been wondering, "What's the point?"

This blog has been going on for five, almost six years now. Now, that's one heck of a long time for a blog I'd initially set up just to do some book reviews and maybe write some nonsense on. But it's stagnated lately. I've run out of fresh ideas, run out of fresh ways to say unfresh things. Heck, even this post feels like I've written it before (hey, I think I wrote that last line before as well...).

When Haloscan got uppity and changed into that crappy Echo comments system, I lost ALL the few thousand comments I'd accumulated over the years. That's a LOT of comments. And I miss 'em. Because what's a blog if there are no comments? I'd initially thought of migrating the whole blog to a new engine like Wordpress with it's own domain name, but since then I've gotten lazy AGAIN, and just decided to leave the blog as it is.

I've been a lot more active in Twitter, true, but somehow it just ain't the same as having a nicely written blog post with people commenting about how cool or how sucky it actually is. And 140 characters just aren't enough sometimes. (Don't get me started on Twitlonger. That's for long-winded people who can't get to the point, but don't have enough intelligent thoughts or the vocabulary for a proper blog post).

Heck, I don't even update Hantu Bola as often anymore (though that's mostly because Liverpool is having a wretched season). It's like all the writing I do for both the day job AND the blog is finally catching up to me and I'm getting sick of it. Not the writing part, but the 'thinking of new ideas' part.

Anyway, I need something to get me going here again. Something fresh, something new to keep me going, something that I can actually feel enthusiastic about enough to keep updating regularly. Something like Suan's Bootcamp posts (without which we wouldn't get half as many updates from her).

Sure, we wish she'd blog about something else sometimes, but she's got such great passion and enthusiasm about the subject that it actually makes the post more interesting. So I need to find something that can spark me to write about it the way OBC sparks her enthusiasm to write about OBC. Since little bloggers like me don't get invited to half as many events as others, and I don't watch THAT many movies (so I can't keep churning out Movie Not-Reviews), I'm really at a loss here.

So... any suggestions?

Why The Fuss Over Avatar?

So Avatar has now overtaken Titanic in the international box office, and is catching up fast in the US domestic market. I reckon by one or two weeks it'll finally sink Titanic's 12 year record.

Really though, I don't get this fanaticism over Avatar. Sure, it's a great film with stunning visual effects and a wonderfully imagined fantasy world. But it really isn't the sort of film I want to watch over and over again. One time would have been enough for me, because while I thought it was a good film, I didn't think it would be as great the second time around, and did not feel the urge to watch it again.

Don't get me wrong, I'm the sort of person who would watch a movie numerous times in the cinema. I watched all three Lord Of the Rings movies at least 5-7 times each in the cinema. I've watched almost every Pixar movie hundreds of times. I watched Transformers again and again because it was FUN. I watched The Dark Knight countless times because it was BRILLIANT. And each subsequent time I watched those movies never diminished my liking of the movie. Rather, every time I watched those movies again, it only made me want to watch it again.

Not so Avatar. After the first time, I did not feel the urge to go watch it again. It wasn't because of the insane crowds, or that it was bad. I just felt it was a great movie that looked really good, but had a pretty piss-poor story with cliched characters/dialogue, and a lot of waffling around in between. The action in the end was excellent, but I wasn't willing to sit through 2 hours of character and story development just to get to that part again.

Sure enough, when I eventually DID go to watch it a second time last week with LL; I found myself thinking the following thoughts as I sat through the movie again:

  • "OH NO, I'll have to sit through two hours of boring story build-up before we get to the good part."
  • "GAH, the whole first part is just people EXPLAINING to the audience what the whole movie is about."
  • "Eh, that Neytiri isn't wearing anything other than those beads. How come still cannot see anything wan?"
  • "Oh geez, the dialogue quite cliche also hor?"
  • "Seriously, James. Shock and Awe? Pre-Emptive Strike? Fighting Terror with Terror? Not one for subtle criticism, are you?"
  • "Holy Celine Dion in a paperbag, that is one shitty Leona Lewis song."
Maybe I'm just being cynical or jaded. But I don't get how people are going on and on about the movie like it's the greatest movie of all time. It's a good movie, yes, but it ain't GREAT. But here we have people getting withdrawal symptoms from 'leaving Pandora'; and others gushing over how excellent the movie is because the world is SO PRETTY and because it has a 'message' for us all.

Really? The movie is great because it LOOKS PRETTY? Since when is a movie a 'must watch' because it 'looks pretty'? God forbid studios will now make movies that 'look pretty' and forget all about good stories.

Then again, maybe it was just me. After all, Transformers had no story and had real crappy dialogue, but hey, I still watched it hundreds of times because it appealed to my nostalgia and my inner fanboy. Maybe Avatar has something that appeals to people's inner Smurf or tree hugger.

James Cameron is a genius, I'll give him that. The dude's got the TOP TWO biggest movies of ALL TIME. Just why those two movies are so big is beyond the understanding of mere mortals. Titanic was understandable. Before there was Twilight, there was Leo, whose face was on every adolescent girl's wall. And for the grown men, there was Kate Winslet's boobs, as well as that small matter of a BIG sinking ship.

Avatar? I guess it caters to the broadest demographic possible - not too deep or violent so the young ones can enjoy it (there are Avatar TOYS , fer gawds sake); and not too shallow so the adults can like it as well. Plus it's got all that hype about industry-changing 3D graphics, and of course, it DOES look pretty. I still don't get why people are going back again and again to watch it though.

Oh well, I guess we should be glad it's Avatar that's making the big bucks and overtaking The Dark Knight, Return of The King at the top of the box office. I mean, can you imagine if one of the Twilight movies did that? Brrrr....

Turn Off that Videocam and Watch the Damn Concert, You Morons!

At the Green Day mosh pit, we were lucky enough to be right in front of a fence so there were not that many idiots in front of us. But then halfway through two girls just barged in front of us and just STOOD there. I wasn't so bothered about it at first, because one of the girls was rather short, and I thought I'd let her have a better view. Then one of them took out a camera and started FILMING the concert.

At that point, I got pissed. I leaned over and told her, "Look, I don't mind you standing in front of me, but can you NOT film the concert? Your camera is blocking my view!"

It wasn't even as if they were big fans of Green Day in the first place. I mean, they were just STANDING there. Not dancing, not singing, just blankly staring at the band, and FILMING the whole thing. Fer gawds sake, you spent ALL THAT MONEY to go to a concert, and stand in the most HAPPENING place - the mosh pit - and you just STAND there? What are you even doing there in the first place?

I mean, what's the point of going to a concert when all you do is stand still, holding that camera up, and watching the entire thing through the camera screen? You might as well be watching it on YouTube or something.

People like that have always been my pet peeve at concerts. Yes, even more than those rowdy people who push and shove in the mosh pit (I mean c'mon, it's a MOSH PIT. Pushing and shoving is MANDATORY) and people who throw water bottles around. Oh wait, I also hate those groups of idiots who dance like they are possessed, kicking and swinging their hands around and basically disregarding everyone else around them. It's like the mosh pit just brings out their innate mob idiot mentality.

There better not be any idiots like that during the Killers concert.... Yeah right, who am I kidding?

Good Bye Noughties. I'll Miss You.

You can always tell when I'm holiday. I never update the blog. That's because I have better things to do than sit in front of the PC when I'm on holiday, godammit! (such as sitting in front of the TV playing Dragon Age: Origins on my XBox...)

Anyway, it's finally the end of 2009, and the Noughties. Wow, one whole decade has gone by in the 21st century.

Looking back at the decade, I can't believe how much I've been through in these ten years. I graduated from university (despite my best efforts to prolong the studying experience). Bummed around in Poland for half a year, doing social work and drinking a lot (I blame Poland for my alcoholic tendencies and for forcing me to acquire an insatiable taste for beer and vodka). Got a job at The Newspaper when I came back (which led to a lot of traveling, concert-going, movie-watching and meeting personal idols). Turned three decades old (which didn't suck as much as I thought it would). Finally moved out and got my own pad (I'm a big boy now, ma!). Started blogging (which I've been doing for half a decade now WTF).

Speaking of blogging, I've somehow managed to keep this blog semi-anonymous for almost five years. Those of you who have followed the blog all these years (THANKS!) and/or know me in real life would know that I have always been particularly anal about being anonymous on the blog. Heck, in the beginning, I even went to the extent of actually going around asking people not to link their pictures of me to my blog, AND wearing an Optimus Prime mask to the Nuffnang 1st Anniversary Party.

At first I did it because I didn't want my boss to find out I had a blog. Then when I found out that he knew about it anyway, I decided I'll keep it anonymous because it let me write about whatever I wanted outside of work. Then later down the road, when excerpts of my blog posts ended up in my work articles (and vice versa, to a lesser extent), I decided I would still stay anonymous because it seemed more fun that way (and I wanted to see if anyone would accuse Real-Life-Me of plagiarizing Blog-Me).

Nowadays though, I've been getting really lazy about this anonymous thingy. Most of you know who I am already anyway. And since I've been hanging out with those crazy bloggers so much these days, there is no way I'd be fully anonymous anymore. As for the 'don't want office to find out' excuse, with a certain femes colleague of mine already openly blogging/Twitting etc. etc. about anything he wanted, I figured, if HE could do it, why can't I?

So, slowly and surely, I started being less anal about being linked to pictures, even posting some myself here. People have even been using my actual name on their links these days, and so far, so good, I haven't been struck down by lightning or worse, gotten a cease and desist memo from anyone yet (touch wood).

So there ya go. In conjunction with the new decade, I now declare that Eye On Everything is no longer an anonymous blog. Doesn't mean I'm gonna be parading camwhore pictures. It's still gonna be pretty much the same as before - same ugly layout, same content, and basically the same nonsense.

Don't hold your breathe for endless camwhore picture posts or me actually publishing my name openly though. This is still eyeris.blogspot.com, not michaelcheang.com.

Oh, oops.

I Paid Good Money for HAHAHAHAHA not Yuk-Yuk, goddammit.

I went for a comedy show tonight. For a comedy show, it wasn't very funny. To me, that is. I was really bored. All the other people in the audience seemed to be laughing their eyes, ears and noses off, but all I could raise throughout the 2 hour plus show was a couple of heh hehs and yuk yuks, and maybe a chuckle or two. And I'm royally pissed off at that.

Hey, I paid bloody eighty bucks for a damn good laugh, a laugh that everyone who apparently saw the show was saying would be coming. For that kind of money I expect GUFFAWS, LOUD HA HAs that will bring the roof down. Not a couple of yuk yuks. I've had CONVERSATIONS that were funnier, goddammit.

I can't fault their presentation though. Even though they DID recycle some routines, and even used a couple of Internet jokes, it was still a well-produced act. So what was it then? Why was I so bored?

So maybe it was the topics they were 'joking' about. Most of the jokes were the usual Malaysian jokes that I used to laugh loudly at - stuff about the corruption, the politics, the education system... But somehow I didn't find them funny this time.

Have I become too jaded for these kind of jokes? Have I lost my sense of humour? Have I lost that innate Malaysian ability to laugh at ourselves? I don't think so. I think it's just that these occurrences, these scandals, these issues and these thorns in our nation are becoming so commonplace that they're just not funny anymore. We've come to a point where it's time to stop laughing at these things. Something's gotta change, goddammit.

But I digress. Back to the 'comedy'. The stereotype racial jokes, the supposedly funny jokes about social networking and the Internet, the cliched Who Wants To Be A Millionaire parodies... it's boring. It's unoriginal. Every Malaysian 'comedian' has done those skits, those jokes, those costumes. And I'm bored of it.

The next time I pay RM80 for a laugh, there better well be LOUD HAHAHAHAHA GUFFAWS or I swear there will be hell to pay.

Project Beta: The TV Channel With REAL Bloggers!

What da fark is this? A TV SHOW about BLOGGERS? 'Uncovering Malaysia's Top Bloggers'? Since when did they need 'uncovering' in the first place? The only reason why they ARE so-called 'top bloggers' is because they are ALREADY uncovered, and certainly don't need further 'uncovering'. If anything, some of them (especially the guys) need more covering up. The girls can stay uncovered hur hur hur.

Anyway. Like I said (and asked during the press conference)... do we REALLY need a SHOW about BLOGGERS? Do we really need to know what goes on 'behind the scenes' and in their 'real lives'? Yeah right. As if they ALL go to Sunway Resort on normal days. As if three minutes is enough to show us how their lives are like. What next, 1 minute shows for "Malaysia's Top Twitterers"?

That said, there ARE a couple of bloggers I'd like to see them film. And they wouldn't even have to write a script or bring them to Sunway to film. All you have to do is follow them around and voila! You've got a show! Heck, with THESE guys, you'd get a whole CHANNEL of different genres of shows!

Dog Blog Lady
Genre: Pet show

Makan-Makan Belog:

So You Think Your Blog Can Party?
Genre: Talent Show
Subject: Fireangel

Give her booze, a dance floor, and she'll fill up the three minutes with non-stop entertainment. She'll even do her Siew Yoke Dance for you if you ask nicely! (for non-Muslims only, ok?). Now, if only she'd actually get back to blogging in the first place...

Blog-E!
Genre: Tabloid and entertainment
Subject:
Cyberred
Her name card says she 'chases rock stars' for a living. And boy is she good at it. Hers could be the kind of show where you stick her backstage in a concert and watch her stalk the rock stars!

Watch as the nutjobs at Hantu Bola get mabuk while watching football and start calling Manure United players twats! Features truly Malaysian football commentary ("KEEPER KAYU!") and brilliant, in-depth match analysis ("CIBAI, THAT LUCAS DAMN USELESS!).

Quaint Eye For The Quaint Blog
Genre: Fashion
Subject: Pinkpau
Features Pinkpau dressing up in different costumes for the entire three minutes. What for? It's a FASHION show, numbskull. Since when do fashion shows need a reason to exist? Besides, she's hot, that's why. hahahaahha.

Life of a Blogger/Journalist
Genre: Nature Documentary
Subject: Eyeris

Follows the life of a blogger-journalist in his natural habitat. Contains EXCITING footage of said blogger pouncing on free doughnuts, devouring free cups of coffee, guzzling beer, and spending a lot of time sitting in front of the computer, sniggering to himself and typing. For the WHOLE three minutes. Because that's what most bloggers are like, no? Oh wait, I'm not a TOP blogger. bah.

A Flooded End to a Crazy Two Weeks

Yes, I've been a BAAAAD blogger. I've been too damn lazy and/or caught up with work that I can't be arsed to think of something I particularly want to blog about these days. Hence the number of Filler Posts Disguised As Proper Updates lately.

It's also been a crazy past two weeks. In between flying to San Francisco to visit Pixar Animation Studios (more on that trip later), my baby nephew Aiden, and flying back just in time for my own birthday party, and then flying off the next day for a much needed holiday it was already a mad, mad sequence of events as it is.

Mana tau, two hours before we were about to board the plane to Langkawi, I got a call from my parents telling me my house was FLOODED. yes, FLOODED.

Long story short, a pipe burst in my house, and thanks to a combination of uneven floors and unfortunately clogged drain holes, there was a half-inch deep flood in my living room, bedroom and library. All my movie posters are gone (except for maybe 1/8 of them) and some of the furniture too. Books, toys and electronics are safe though, thank god.

My living room looks like disaster central now. All the furniture has been upended and turned upside down to dry, and I've had to heart-brokenly throw out almost my entire movie poster collection. That's five years worth of collecting, and an estimated collective worth of at least RM2000 for the whole collection. SIGGGHHHH.

Happily, after two days of drying, the furniture is finally dry again, albeit a little fucked up at the bottom. Time to get back to rearranging the furniture, and maybe jig things round a little. If there are any positives to the whole disaster, it's that at least my floor is nice and clean, and I was forced to throw out some stuff that I would otherwise be too damn sentimental about to do so otherwise.

It's like I was moving in all over again. Hmmm, maybe I should have ANOTHER drunkened re-housewarming party after everything is done. YAY!

Earth Hour IS A Fucking Publicity Stunt

All you fellas pledging to turn off your fucking lights for ONE FUCKING HOUR on Saturday to kononnya show how 'environmentally friendly' you are because you're 'making a difference' by saving energy', go take a look around your house and tell me...
  • How many air-conditioning units do you have, and how long do you keep EACH OF THEM on for?
  • How many of your lights are still those energy-guzzling incandescent bulbs?
  • How many of your lights do you keep on even when no one is in the room?
  • How many electrical appliances do you leave on standby mode for the entire day (TV, Astro, PC etc)
  • How many plastic bags do you use each time you go grocery shopping?
Participating in Earth Hour doesn't make you a fucking environmentally-friendly saint, you fools. At best, it'll save SOME energy, which will then be guzzled up ten times over by that air-conditioning unit you keep running in your bedroom even when you're not in it.

So yes, OF COURSE Earth Hour is a fucking publicity stunt. Creating awareness through the publicity it generates is all it's good for, since it does fuck all in the long-run in terms of actual energy conservation.

Unfortunately, everyone and their donkey seems to be so taken in taking part in it, so much so that as Suanie says, sooner or later Hallmark will be making greeting cards for it.

Now, if only all these people stopped pretending they're doing something by flipping that switch off for an hour a YEAR; and started doing SOMETHING sustainable that actually helps save energy all year round... now imagine how much energy THAT would save.
