Malaysia Boleh!
Well, sort of.
Eh, 70% Malaysian production ok!
And it's the most important parts too!



It's like a sequel to the original WOTW.
Yeah, after all those silly Martians died,
After catching a cold MUAHAHAHA.
So, after that, humans just sapu their toys lor.
And built their OWN awesome tripods.
FUCK YEAH!



Can someone PLEASE make a polystone statue of the Goliath Tripod?
The design is AWESOME.
It's all designed by Malaysians, BTW,
I loved the way they mixed steampunk and Martian tech,
The animation, the design were also pretty damn good.



Ok, now on to the story.
Er, ok, this is where it's a little flimsy.
Ok fine, it's a fairly simple story.
Martians came, killed, and ACHOOO! died.
Humans survived, and made AWESOME MARTIAN KILLING MACHINES.
Martians come again, TO KILL US ALL!
(This time after taking their anti-flu jabs).
Humans fight back valiantly!
KABOOM RATATATAT PEW PEW ZZZEENGGGEEOWWWWWW
(that last one's the heat ray)
Annnd.. you can guess the rest.



Yup, pretty standard story,
But don't let that stop you from watching this.
It's actually pretty entertaining.
Like watching Robotech or Gundam,
But without the complicated trippy stuff.
Well, at least it felt that way to ME.



I like how they set it in WWI though.
It was like a WHAT IF Martians attacked before WWI.
And how they put in all those historical figures.
Teddy Roosevelt, The Red Baron,
NIKOLA TESLA FTW!



Adam Baldwin FTW!
Yeah, his character pretty much steals the show
Ok, he's only in it for a bit, but STILL!
The rest were not bad,
There's even a Malayan dude there,
Goes to a bar and drinks tea,
And he's got mad keris-wielding Martian-killing skills!



It's a bit slow in the beginning,
But once the tripods start kicking ass,
Then it gets pretty cool.
Seriously, if Tom Cruise's movie had him driving a tripod
And taking the fight to the MArtians,
Instead of just running away and hiding,
I bet it would have been SO MUCH MORE AWESOME.

Hmmm, so odd seeing Karen Kong onscreen,
Way back in 2007 I was the first person to interview her.
She was an unknown then, just starting out.
She was so shy and awkward,
And didn't even know how to answer my questions properly.
Now, she's a star! Quite hot also!
Not just in music, but also in a movie also!
Wah I so proud la.
hehehe.



Anyway, Nasi Lemak very the funny.
It's a bit disjointed though.
Some slapstick parts no need also can.
But the jokes are actually pretty smart wan.
Especally if you're familiar with MAlaysia,
The races, the stereotypes, the politics, the culture,
The food, the language.. EVERYTHING lah.
(Except religion. nothing sensitive here)
Oh, also if you're familiar with Namewee's 'career',



It's a Malaysian movie.
got Malay English, Chinese, Tamil, Hokkien Cantonese...
Not a Malaysian-Chinese/Malay/Indian movie.

Say got Nicholas Teo and Penny Tai,
Those two only have TWO SECONDS of screen time... COMBINED.
(At least Penny had two lines to say)

It's a bit slow,
And sometimes damn mou liu.
But I liked it.
Damn nostalgia ok
Reminds me of when I was growing up in Temerloh
All the kopitiams, playing guli, and cycling around.



Also the puppy love part,
C'mon admit it, we've all been through that before.
We've all had ONE GIRL whom we used to like,
But was too shy to admit to her,
And always doing silly little things to impress her.
Hehe still kids mar,
Donno how to kau lui yet hahaha.



Not bad for a first film, Aniu.
But the REAL test will be in your next movie.
When you can't repeat the same trick,
And ask ALL YOUR famous friends to come and join the movie.
Then again, what's the point of having famous friends,
When you can't use them once in a while, huh?
Eh, if you make a sequel,
Can you call it Bak Kut Teh Forbidden Love?

15Malaysia: Wash Eyes and Eat Wind Bersama Taxi KJ!

Sorry about the lack of updates. I'm on leave currently, and who's got time to blog when you're on leave eh?

Anyway, 15Malaysia's latest film - Meter is up:



Featuring the infamous Khairy Jamaluddin, Amber Chia, Jason Lo and a few others, it's about this taxi driver who rants about everything from football to language and what not.

Last I checked, the 15Malaysia site was still down, so if you're curious to see how Khariry Jamaluddin fares as a taxi driver ranting about Malaysian football, go to the video on YouTube HERE.


There've also been two other films - Slovak Sling (featuring Harith Iskandar, Patrick Teoh and a pretty funny DVD seller), and James Lee's Gerhana (which you might wanna have a cup of coffee before watching...).

Go check them out (or not) when the site is back up!

15Malaysia: One Future. No Voices.

Tan Chui Mui's One Future is up now on 15Malaysia.com:



I have to say, when I first saw this during the launch on the big screen, I was slightly put off by the jerky frame by frame style. But watching it again here, on a small PC screen, it seems smoother.

Can't fault the story though. Where the rest of the shorts have gone for comedy, drama, and even pretentiousness, this one is a short but nevertheless rather cool pseudo-science-fiction dystopian alternate reality Malaysia, where everyone lives in peace and harmony but are not allowed to speak.

Hey, maybe it isn't THAT alternate a reality after all...

Anyway, check it out. It's got Ida Nerina and politician Tian Chua in it too. And it's also got one heck of a subtle message (which really isn't so subtle, but you get the point).

And while you're at it, go check out the previous two shorts - The Son and Lumpur as well. I won't promise you'll LIKE them, but go support anyway lah...

What it DOES have is a poignant little message about how not everyone dreams about having big houses with Roman columns and rows of Ferraris.

For many, just having a home is dream enough.

Amir Muhammad's The Tree is up on 15Malaysia. More interview/commentary by Nik Aziz more than anything, it's one of the more serious films of the 15, but still worth a watch.

Some have unexpected stars.
Meter has Khairy Jamaluddin as a taxi driver wtf!
Health Paranoia has a very sporting Health Minister!
Even Nik Aziz is part of it.

Now that's a face you don't expect to see on a movie poster...



Some were funny, some were serious,
Some were a bit boring, some were pretty fast.
Most of them were thought-provoking,
While several were rather disturbing.
Some were a bit abstract (and maybe a tad indulgent)
But all of them were uniquely Malaysian.
